Substantial Defect
One that impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle. Stalling, brake failure, steering and persistent electrical faults qualify. A rattle generally does not.
Ford has recalled more vehicles than any other manufacturer for several years running. A recall is not a Lemon Law claim — but an unrepaired defect on a recalled vehicle very often is.

Florida looks for three attempts at the same defect. New York looks for four. Recall work and visits that found nothing both count.
Thirty cumulative days in Florida and in New York. Cumulative, not consecutive, and the days count whether or not anything was fixed.
The defect has to be reported while the vehicle is inside the warranty or rights period. When it was reported matters more than today's date.
Ford leads the American market in recall volume and has done so for several consecutive years. In 2026 alone the company filed 34 separate recall campaigns covering roughly 9.8 million vehicles. That scale matters for a consumer with a defective Ford, but not for the reason most people assume.
Recall repairs also count as repair attempts. Where a recall remedy was performed and the fault persisted, that visit belongs in the count alongside every other attempt. Owners routinely exclude recall work from their own tally because it was free and initiated by the manufacturer, which quietly weakens their position.
The two thresholds are presumptions, not hard gates. A defect serious enough to be dangerous can qualify with fewer attempts, and a Ford that misses both can still carry a claim under federal warranty law.

A recall is the manufacturer acknowledging that a defect exists across a population of vehicles and offering a remedy. It is a public admission of the fault pattern, which makes it useful evidence. What it is not is a Lemon Law claim.
The claim arises from what happened to your vehicle: the defect was reported, the dealership was given a reasonable number of attempts to repair it, and it is still there. A Ford recall notice or technical service bulletin covering the fault on your model proves the manufacturer already knew, and it undercuts any argument that the problem is somehow misuse.
A growing share of Ford campaigns are software-related, which matters because software faults are intermittent and dealerships frequently cannot replicate them on demand. That does not make the visit stop counting.

These are the defect categories that generate the most Lemon Law and warranty claims against Ford. A vehicle showing one of these is not automatically a claim. A vehicle showing one of these repeatedly and unrepaired usually is.
Harsh shifting, shuddering, hesitation and unexpected downshift. Ford recalled 1,392,935 F-150 trucks from the 2015-2017 model years over an unexpected downshift condition that can cause a loss of control.
Two 2026 campaigns covering more than 1.7 million vehicles between them: images not displaying, or displaying incorrectly, across Escape, Explorer, Bronco, Edge and Lincoln models. A rearview camera is a federally mandated safety system.
The largest Ford action of 2026 at 4,381,878 vehicles — F-150, Super Duty, Maverick, Expedition, Ranger, E-Transit and Lincoln Navigator. Trailer lighting and brake malfunction under load.
Rear suspension toe link fracture on 412,774 Explorers from the 2017-2019 model years, and seat belt pretensioner failures on 419,967 Expedition and Navigator units.
Windshield wiper failure across 604,533 Escape, Explorer, Aviator and Corsair vehicles from the 2020-2022 model years. Wiper failure in rain is a use-and-safety defect, not a convenience complaint.
A growing share of Ford campaigns are software-related, which matters because software faults are intermittent and dealerships frequently cannot replicate them on demand. The visit still counts as an attempt.
Which one applies depends on the state, the facts and what gets negotiated with Ford. All four start with the same free case review.

Check My Case ↗A recall does not create a claim. It does establish that the manufacturer already acknowledges the fault pattern, which is evidence worth having. Figures from NHTSA as of 21 September 2026 — check your VIN for open recalls at no cost.
