CHEVROLET LEMON LAW.

Chevrolet does not file its own recalls. Every campaign goes in under General Motors, LLC — which is why searching "Chevrolet recall" turns up so little, and why the numbers on your vehicle are bigger than they look.

What Decides It

Four facts, in this order.

Chevrolet built it, but Chevrolet does not decide it. These four questions decide it, and the repair orders in your glovebox answer all four.

01

Substantial Defect

One that impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle. Stalling, brake failure, steering and persistent electrical faults qualify. A rattle generally does not.

02

Repair Attempts

Florida looks for three attempts at the same defect. New York looks for four. Recall work and visits that found nothing both count.

03

Days Out of Service

Thirty cumulative days in Florida and in New York. Cumulative, not consecutive, and the days count whether or not anything was fixed.

04

Coverage Window

The defect has to be reported while the vehicle is inside the warranty or rights period. When it was reported matters more than today's date.

Chevrolet is General Motors' volume division, and that has a practical consequence most owners never learn: NHTSA records every Chevrolet recall under the manufacturer name General Motors, LLC. Search by the badge and you find almost nothing. Search by VIN and the picture changes.

It also means the defect that affects your Silverado very likely affects a GMC Sierra and a Cadillac Escalade too, because they share the engine, the brake modules and the body. The 6.2L L87 V8 campaign covered 597,571 trucks and SUVs across three divisions at once.

Recall repairs count as repair attempts. Where a recall remedy was performed and the fault persisted, that visit belongs in your count. The L87 engine repair is the sharpest example: NHTSA opened Engineering Analysis EA26-005 in August 2026 precisely because the remedy may not have worked, covering 997,743 vehicles.

Recall or Claim

A recall says GM knows. A claim says they were given the chance to fix it.

A recall is the manufacturer acknowledging that a defect exists across a population of vehicles and offering a remedy. It is a public admission of the fault pattern, which makes it useful evidence. What it is not is a Lemon Law claim.

The claim arises from what happened to your vehicle: the defect was reported, the dealership was given a reasonable number of attempts to repair it, and it is still there. A GM recall notice or technical service bulletin covering the fault on your model proves the manufacturer already knew.

Two of Chevrolet's biggest 2026 campaigns were filed only after tens of thousands of owner complaints — 19,117 on the Malibu camera and more than 33,000 on the Trax and Trailblazer. Those owners were making repair visits long before the recall existed, and every one of those visits counts.

WHAT KEEPS COMING BACK.

These are the defect categories that generate the most Lemon Law and warranty claims against Chevrolet. A vehicle showing one of these is not automatically a claim. A vehicle showing one of these repeatedly and unrepaired usually is.

6.2L V8 Rod-Bearing Failure

The L87 6.2L V8 in Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban can spin a bearing and seize without warning. NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA26-005 now covers 997,743 GM trucks and SUVs from 2021 to 2026 because the recall repair itself may not hold.

Rearview Camera Blackout

Two 2026 campaigns cover blank or distorted backup images: 271,770 Malibus filed after 19,117 complaints, and 306,511 Trax, Trailblazer and Buick crossovers after more than 33,000. A rearview camera is a federally mandated safety system.

Delayed Low-Brake-Fluid Warning

Recall 24V-674 covered 449,671 GM trucks and SUVs, 259,440 of them Chevrolets, whose brake warning lamp could fail to signal fluid loss before the pedal went soft.

EV High-Voltage Defects

Chevrolet EVs show repeat high-voltage faults: 52,417 Bolt EV and EUV models recalled over fire-risk battery cells, and 40,233 Blazer EVs for a parking-brake harness that corrodes and self-applies.

8-Speed Shudder and Hard Shifts

GM's 8L90 and 8L45 eight-speed automatics draw persistent torque-converter shudder, hard-shift and slipping complaints across Silverado, Camaro and Colorado, and have been the subject of long-running class litigation.

Instrument Cluster Blackouts

Recall 23V-744 covered 60,154 vehicles including the 2024 Trax, whose Virtual Cockpit software blanked the instrument panel at startup or while driving, hiding speed and warning lamps.

Where It Ends Up

Four ways a Chevrolet claim resolves.

Which one applies depends on the state, the facts and what gets negotiated with General Motors. All four start with the same free case review.

Because NHTSA does not file it under Chevrolet. Every Chevrolet campaign is recorded under the manufacturer name General Motors, LLC, so a search by badge returns almost nothing. Search by VIN instead — NHTSA's free VIN lookup reports open recalls on your specific vehicle regardless of which manufacturer entity filed them. This is also why no reliable "Chevrolet had X recalls" figure exists: NHTSA publishes group totals, not per-badge totals.
