Substantial Defect
One that impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle. Stalling, brake failure, steering and persistent electrical faults qualify. A rattle generally does not.
GMC does not file its own recalls. Every campaign goes in under General Motors, LLC — and the largest of them, 597,571 vehicles for an engine that seizes without warning, is still under federal investigation because the repair may not have worked.

Florida looks for three attempts at the same defect. New York looks for four. Recall work and visits that found nothing both count.
Thirty cumulative days in Florida and in New York. Cumulative, not consecutive, and the days count whether or not anything was fixed.
The defect has to be reported while the vehicle is inside the warranty or rights period. When it was reported matters more than today's date.
GMC is General Motors' truck and SUV division, and NHTSA records every GMC recall under the manufacturer name General Motors, LLC. Search by the badge and you find almost nothing. Search by VIN and the picture changes.
GMC shares platforms, engines and transmissions with Chevrolet's full-size trucks, so the same defect usually hits the Sierra and the Silverado together. The 6.2L L87 V8 campaign covered 597,571 vehicles across three divisions, 297,404 of them GMCs — 153,637 Sierra 1500, 82,841 Yukon and 60,926 Yukon XL.
Recall repairs count as repair attempts. GM had logged 28,102 L87 engine failure reports before it filed that recall, and in August 2026 NHTSA opened Engineering Analysis EA26-005 covering 997,743 vehicles because the remedy may not hold. A repair that did not fix the fault is still an attempt.

A recall is the manufacturer acknowledging that a defect exists across a population of vehicles and offering a remedy. It is a public admission of the fault pattern, which makes it useful evidence. What it is not is a Lemon Law claim.
The claim arises from what happened to your vehicle: the defect was reported, the dealership was given a reasonable number of attempts to repair it, and it is still there. A GM recall notice covering the fault on your model proves the manufacturer already knew.
One 2026 GMC campaign carried a do-not-drive instruction — 66 Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles whose transfer case was missing an oil pickup tube, risking sudden wheel lock-up. Small campaigns like that matter because they show the fault is real, not a driver complaint.

Look your VIN up under General Motors, not under GMC.
These are the defect categories that generate the most Lemon Law and warranty claims against GMC. A vehicle showing one of these is not automatically a claim. A vehicle showing one of these repeatedly and unrepaired usually is.
153,637 Sierra 1500, 82,841 Yukon and 60,926 Yukon XL vehicles were recalled under campaign 25V-274 for rod and crankshaft defects. GM had logged 28,102 L87 failure reports before filing.
138,017 GMC full-size trucks and SUVs were part of the 449,671-vehicle campaign 24V-674, in which the brake warning lamp may not alert the driver to fluid loss before the pedal degrades.
Campaign 26V-289 told owners of 66 Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles not to drive them, after a missing transfer-case oil pickup tube left bearings unlubricated and risked sudden wheel lock-up.
2014-2017 GMC Acadias sit inside a 995,085-vehicle recall for driver airbag inflators that can explode on deployment and throw metal fragments at occupants.
GMC's large touchscreens and digital clusters draw repeat blank-screen, reboot and lost-camera-feed complaints, matching GM-wide display campaigns such as the 60,154-vehicle Virtual Cockpit recall.
GMC issued a 2026 Yukon recall for incorrect front wheel hub bolts, one of several chassis-fastener campaigns that produce vibration, noise and handling complaints on full-size GMCs.
Which one applies depends on the state, the facts and what gets negotiated with General Motors. All four start with the same free case review.

Ask Us Directly ↗The law applies the same way to every brand sold in the state. What differs is the defect pattern, the warranty terms and how hard the manufacturer fights.
