KIA LEMON LAW.

Kia recalled 462,869 Tellurides in 2026 because the front seat motor can overheat and start a fire — including on vehicles that had already been through the earlier recall. A repair that had to be redone is evidence, not bad luck.

What Decides It

Four facts, in this order.

Kia built it, but Kia does not decide it. These four questions decide it, and the repair orders in your glovebox answer all four.

01

Substantial Defect

One that impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle. Stalling, brake failure, steering and persistent electrical faults qualify. A rattle generally does not.

02

Repair Attempts

Florida looks for three attempts at the same defect. New York looks for four. Recall work and visits that found nothing both count.

03

Days Out of Service

Thirty cumulative days in Florida and in New York. Cumulative, not consecutive, and the days count whether or not anything was fixed.

04

Coverage Window

The defect has to be reported while the vehicle is inside the warranty or rights period. When it was reported matters more than today's date.

Kia is part of the Hyundai Motor Group and shares the defects that matter most: the Theta II, Nu and Gamma GDI engine programme, the E-GMP charging control unit used across EV6, EV9 and the Hyundai Ioniq line, and the missing-immobiliser theft problem that produced a settlement with 35 attorneys general in December 2025.

The Telluride recall is the one worth understanding properly. Campaign 26V430 covers 462,869 vehicles from 2020 to 2024 whose front power seat motor may overheat and catch fire — and the stated cause includes an improper repair under the earlier recall 24V407. A recall reissued because the first remedy failed is documentary proof that the manufacturer had its chance and did not take it.

The Theta II class settlement added 2.1 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles, extending the warranty for connecting-rod bearing failure to 15 years or 150,000 miles. Kia models in scope include the Forte, Forte Koup, Optima Hybrid, Sorento, Soul and Sportage.

Recall or Claim

A recall says Kia knows. A recall of a recall says the first repair did not work.

A recall is the manufacturer acknowledging that a defect exists across a population of vehicles and offering a remedy. It is a public admission of the fault pattern, which makes it useful evidence. What it is not is a Lemon Law claim.

The claim arises from what happened to your vehicle: the defect was reported, the dealership was given a reasonable number of attempts to repair it, and it is still there.

Kia's 2026 Telluride campaign names a failed earlier repair among its causes. If your vehicle went through 24V407 and then needed 26V430, you already have two documented attempts on one fault before counting anything you did yourself.

WHAT KEEPS COMING BACK.

These are the defect categories that generate the most Lemon Law and warranty claims against Kia. A vehicle showing one of these is not automatically a claim. A vehicle showing one of these repeatedly and unrepaired usually is.

Theta II Engine Seizure

Shared Theta II 2.4L and Nu and Gamma GDI engines shed bearing debris and seize, stalling the car. The class settlement added 2.1 million vehicles and a 15-year, 150,000-mile warranty extension.

Power Seat Motor Fires

A stuck seat slide knob or a botched earlier repair lets the front power seat motor overheat and catch fire parked or driving. Campaign 26V430 covers 462,869 model-year 2020-2024 Tellurides.

Carnival Fuel Leak Fire Risk

Fuel can leak where the fuel pipe meets the fuel rail, creating fire risk across five model years. Campaign 26V232 covers 141,032 Carnival minivans from 2022 through 2026.

Instrument Display Failure

A software error blanks the instrument cluster across eleven Kia variants, breaching federal display and tire-pressure standards. Campaign 26V046 covers 42,677 model-year 2025-2026 vehicles.

Child Airbag Suppression Fault

Misrouted occupant-detection wiring can leave the passenger airbag armed with a child or child seat in the front seat. Campaign 26V545 covers 21,290 model-year 2025-2026 EV9 SUVs.

Transmission Shudder and Slip

Harsh shifting, hesitation and outright slipping recur in the Sorento, Sportage and K5 — a complaint and warranty pattern rather than an open campaign, which makes the repair orders decisive.

Where It Ends Up

Four ways a Kia claim resolves.

Which one applies depends on the state, the facts and what gets negotiated with Kia. All four start with the same free case review.

It is among the strongest facts a claim can have. Campaign 26V430 covers 462,869 Tellurides and lists among its causes an improper repair under the earlier recall 24V407 — in other words, Kia is acknowledging that the first remedy did not hold. That is two documented repair attempts on one fault before you count anything you arranged yourself.
