Headline-grabbing Ford Expedition problems may leave you thinking you have a lemon. The law is not on your side.

You may believe your Ford Expedition is a lemon due to recent headlines, including a recall issued for 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models due to a risk of engine fires. If that doesn’t make a Ford Expedition a lemon, what does?

Owners have been told to park the vehicles outdoors while they wait for repairs, and a class-action lawsuit has been filed against Ford Motor Company. If you own a Ford Expedition and it is giving you trouble, you may have a lemon law claim, but you need to understand how the lemon law works.

Is my recalled Ford Expedition a Lemon?

In general, you cannot file a Florida Lemon Law claim for one of the recalled Expeditions. The Florida Lemon Law requires claims to be filed within 24 months of the day you take delivery of the vehicle. The recalled Expeditions and Navigators were manufactured prior to April 1, 2021, and while it is possible that some lingered on dealership lots until early 2022, the majority of these vehicles are now outside of lemon law protection.

If you bought a Ford Expedition or Lincoln Navigator less than 24 months ago and it is experiencing problems, you are eligible to file under the Florida lemon law if either or both of the following statements are true:

  1. The vehicle has been back to the shop for repairs at least 3 times for the same problem.
  2. The vehicle has been in the shop for at least 30 days.

What problems make a Ford Expedition a lemon?

Any issue that requires 3 or more attempts to repair, that cannot be repaired or that leaves your vehicle in the shop for more than 30 days makes a Ford Expedition eligible for a lemon law claim. The good news for those who bought a 2022 or 2023 model year Ford Expedition is that reported problems have been rare. Ford did issue 2 safety recalls for this vehicle. One of them was for missing information in the owners’ manual on the proper adjustment of head restraints. The other was related to trailer brake failures caused by a software problem.

Ford appears to have increased quality significantly for the Expedition in the wake of the engine fire problems that affected 2021 models. Keep in mind that 2022 and 2023 models are still relatively young, so significant problems may soon be starting to appear.

Is My Ford Expedition a Lemon Under Florida Law?

The Ford Expedition’s reputation took a big hit from the engine fire recall, but if you own a 2022 or 2023 Expedition or Navigator, this should not be a problem for your vehicle. You may have also heard about spark plugs that eject from the engine, but this problem existed back in the early 2000s.

There can still be significant issues that could crop up with Ford Expedition engines, transmissions and electrical issues that could qualify your 2022-2024 Expedition or Lincoln Navigator as a lemon. As these vehicles spend more time on the road, it is possible that common problems will emerge. The common problems that get vehicles labeled as lemons often show up between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, when routine wear reveals defects in materials or manufacturing.
